Unlike his counterpart, Colin Montgomerie, Pavin doesn't have an embarrassment of riches from which to choose. He has a bunch of candidates who, for the most part, don't stand out from one another. But perhaps one of the candidates will emulate Edoardo Molinari and win the last tournament prior to the captain's picks, forcing his way on the team.
Matt Kuchar took the lead in the FedEx Cup points by winning The Barclays, but Kuchar had already earned his spot in the Ryder Cup as an automatic qualifier. The points list of players who failed to automatically qualify looks like this:
Anthony Kim, 3,274.684
Lucas Glover, 3,052.874
Zach Johnson, 3,051.897
Tiger Woods, 2,902.580
Bo Van Pelt, 2,662.234
Stewart Cink, 2,644.833
Ben Crane, 2,629.796
Ricky Barnes, 2,610.171
Nick Watney, 2,557.441
Sean O'Hair, 2,417.574
J.B. Holmes, 2,390.710
Rickie Fowler, 2,353.320
It's a given, I think, that Pavin will choose Woods. Pavin's other selections will, I'm guessing, be Kim, Johnson and Cink. I would select Johnson, Woods, O'Hair and Fowler. But maybe that (among many other reasons) is why I'm not captain.
As for the FedEx Cup, only the Top 100 advanced out of The Barclays and into the Deutsche Bank. Jerry Kelly, Robert Garrigus, David Duval and Ben Curtis were among those who failed to move on.
Some of the players making moves at The Barclays to get into the Deutsche Bank were:
- Troy Matteson, from 114th on the points list to 88th
- J.P. Hayes, 108th to 76th
- Ryuji Imada, 107th to 73rd
- Tiger Woods, 112th to 65th
- Kevin Streelman, 102nd to 18th
From the Deutsche Bank, only the Top 70 advance on to the BMW Championship. So Boo Weekley (96), Aaron Baddeley (93), Kenny Perry (90), Vijay Singh (86), Paul Goydos (84), John Rollins (79) and Davis Love III (72) are among those with work to do this week.
