Ho-hum, Another 60 on the PGA Tour

(Update: Guess I should have waited a few days for this post and titled it, "Ho-hum, another 59 on the PGA Tour.")

Are we reaching the point where a round of 60 in a PGA Tour event isn't something out of the ordinary?

J.B. Holmes shot 60 on Saturday in the third round of the Greenbrier Classic, and both Holmes and D.A. Points - who finished at 61 - were in position to challenge 59.

I track rounds of 60 on the PGA Tour, but if the 60s keep coming then at some point those scores are no longer worth tracking. We're not quite there yet, though: While Holmes' 60 is the third of 2010, it's still just the 24th in PGA Tour history.

An interesting thing about that list of 60s is that all of those scores happened either prior to 1958 or after 1989. The first 60 was shot in 1951, and there were six more through 1957. Then from 1958 through 1989, none. And from 1990 to present, 17 more. Four of those are within the past year.

There's no denying it's a great time to go low. This year has been full of scoring accomplishments. Starting with the most recent and working backward:

  • 17-year-old Bobby Wyatt shoots 57 in the Alabama state boys championship
  • Carl Pettersson shoots 60 in the Canadian Open
  • Trevor Murphy shoots 56 in a Nationwide Tour pro-am
  • Rory McIlory ties the major championship record with a 63 at the British Open
  • Steve Stricker shoots 60 at the John Deere Classic (and sets the tour's three-round scoring record)
  • Paul Goydos shoots 59 at the Deere
  • A pro in Calgary shoots 25 over nine holes
  • And on May 2, Ryo Ishikawa started the low-scoring madness by shooting 58 in the final round to win a Japan Tour tournament

The most amazing thing is that this has all been done with the new groove rule. They must be setting up the courses a little easier around the greens.

Ho-hum- Appleby shot a 59 – I think that is better than a 60 – (sorry I went to South Carolina)
