What can go wrong next for Michelle Wie? First her putting - which was much improved at the end of 2009 - deserted her. Then she missed the cut at the U.S. Women's Open. And today, in the pro-am at the Evian Masters, Wie left the course suffering from what has been called "heat exhaustion."
A tournament official said that Wie went from the course to a doctor's office, and that Wie is expected to play as scheduled in the four-round tournament, which begins on Thursday. The Associated Press quoted the tournament's press officer saying that Wie "didn't feel faint" and "She went to see a doctor and everything is fine."
The Evian Masters is one of the premiere events on the LPGA Tour, and is immediately followed on the schedule by the Women's British Open.
The high temperature in Evian, France, today was around 90F, but more than temperature plays into a person's susceptibility to heat exhaustion.
Wie has left a golf course once before after heat-related problems. At the 2006 PGA Tour John Deere Classic, she withdrew midway through the second round, citing heat exhaustion, and was taken from the course in an ambulance.
