This Week: Honda Classic

By , About.com Guide   March 2, 2010

Follow me on:

The Honda Classic tees off this week, with Honda in its 29th year of sponsorship - the longest marriage of title sponsor and tournament currently on the PGA Tour. Y.E. Yang, coming off a good tournament in Phoenix, is back to defend his title.

Another golfer who is back this week is Brett Wetterich. Wetterich hasn't played on the PGA Tour since the 2008 U.S. Open, during which he suffered torn tendons in his right wrist. The former Ryder Cupper has been injury plagued, first by shoulder problems, then wrist injuries, then a bum knee.

Young guns Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy are playing, which could lead to a citywide shortage of hair conditioner. Also in the field are Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Anthony Kim, Vijay Singh, Paul Casey, Camilo Villegas and David Duval. Sam Saunders is playing on his fourth sponsor exemption of the year - when Arnold Palmer is your Grandpa, exemptions are apparently easy to come by.

Check the Honda Classic tournament page for the list of past champions plus more tourney info and trivia.

I had to go and look up Wetterichs name to see his face. I had forgotten who he was, but as soon as I saw the picture…I was like oh ya – the guy with the really athletic swing.

It kind of makes sense that he has had to deal with injuries with the positions he is in throughout the golf swing.

His swing and his outward appearance suggest a man of will. Despite being able to pound the ball, check out some pictures of his swing at impact, he makes it work.

I can cheer for a guy like this!!! He reminds me that with the rigth outlook and a great deal of practice on the short-game… golf is really just about determination and figuring out what works for you!

Thanks for the article – I am now looking forward to following Wetterich.

We will following the Honda Classic on our Live International Golf Radio Show. Oh, and we don’t think Tiger will be playing in the masters.
