The sentencing follows Thorpe's guilty plea last September to two counts of failing to pay taxes. He could have been sentenced to two years, but the judge today gave Thorpe one year in prison plus two years of supervised release, and ordered Thorpe to try to repay the debt upon his supervised release.
Thorpe is seventh on the Champions Tour's all-time money list with career earnings on the senior circuit of $13.4 million. Thorpe has 13 career Champions Tour wins, 17th-best on that list. Thorpe was 35th on the Champions money list in 2009 with earnings of $437,963. His last victory was in 2007.
Before joining the Champions Tour, Thorpe played 459 tournaments on the PGA Tour, with three victories and nearly $2 million in career earnings.
Thorpe must report to authorities by April 1 to begin serving his sentence.
