Titleist's Pro V1 golf balls are mighty popular. So popular that two individuals in Illinois allegedly set up a scam to use the balls to defraud consumers, charities and golf pro shops. Those two men - Lloyd Morris, of Deerfield, Ill., and Marco Maggiore, of Buffalo Grove, Ill. - were arrested on Nov. 23 by the Lincolnshire (Ill.) Police Department, Titleist has revealed.

According to police, the alleged fraud worked this way: The two alleged perpetrators sent email blasts offering logoed Pro V1s at prices that sounded too good to be true. At least 88 individuals/businesses/charities are known to have placed orders, only to never receive any balls. Damages from the alleged scam are believed to be around $400,000.

In addition, the two alleged scammers placed orders for Pro V1s with pro shops, took the merchandise, but according to police never paid.

The two were operating under the business names Iconic Concepts and Bellamax, Titleist reported in a news release today. The alleged scammers are charged with money laundering, computer fraud, mail fraud and theft.
