Both Woods' representatives and a spokesperson for the hospital where Woods was treated and released described the injuries as "minor."
Woods left his home in Windermere, Fla., around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning, ran over a fire hydrant, then smashed into a tree in a neighbor's yard. Woods' wife Elin Nordegren, hearing the commotion, rushed out of their house and to the vehicle. Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor told the Associated Press the Elin smashed out a vehicle window using a golf club and helped get Woods out of the vehicle.
When officers arrived, Saylor said, Woods had several facial cuts and blood in his mouth, and was in and out of conciousness.
Perhaps those afternoon reports of "serious" injuries stemmed from Woods' condition at the scene, which sounds scary. But Woods was taken to a local hospital, treated and released, and, as mentioned above, the hospital described the injuries as minor.
Alcohol was not involved, sources told the AP, but the accident remains under investigation and charges are possible.
See Golfweek's report or the AP report for a fuller treatment.
Update: The Orlando Sentinel reports that the local sheriff's department says Woods was unconcious for six minutes at the scene after officers arrived.
