Money-List Reckoning on the PGA Tour

Follow me on:

The 2009 PGA Tour season is over after Stephen Ames' playoff victory at the Children's Miracle Network Classic. But Ames wasn't the only winner - a couple golfers did well enough at the Disney to jump inside the Top 125 on the money list, securing their tour cards for 2010.

Of course, that means a couple other golfers got bumped out of the Top 125.

First, the good news: Nicholas Thompson and Jimmy Walker, who entered the Children's Miracle Network at Nos. 132 and 130, respectively, moved up to Nos. 123 and 125. Thompson (older brother of teen phenom Alexis Thompson) did so by carding a final-round 66 and moving up to a tie for 11th at the Disney.

Walker, a player of great potential whose career has been stymied by injuries, made it a little more interesting. He double-bogied the 17th and hit a wayward approach on the 18th, but got up-and-down for par to close with a 69. That left him tied for 15th and earning just enough money to get that last, fully exempt 125th spot.

Now, the bad news: Robert Garrigus and David Duval, who entered the Children's Miracle Network at Nos. 123 and 125, respectively, dropped to Nos. 127 and 130. Both players missed the cut at Disney.

Here are the players who just missed, finishing 126th through 135th on the money list:

126. Will MacKenzie, $659,686
127. Robert Garrigus, $657,204
128. Jeff Maggert, $651,384
129. Chris Riley, $630,417
130. David Duval, $623,824
131. Tim Herron, $619,843
132. Joe Ogilvie, $613,700
133. Todd Hamilton, $605,225
134. Matt Jones, $593,313
135. Chris DiMarco, $584,075

There are many more familiar names farther down the list: Carl Petterson, Stuart Appleby, Tom Lehman, Tommy Armour III, Rocco Mediate, Corey Pavin, Dean Wilson, Jason Gore to name a few. Many of the players outside the Top 125 will play in the Q-School finals next month. A few, like Lehman, may decide to focus on the Champions Tour. And some may decide that different combinations of status - past-champions status, partial status for finishing between 126 and 150 - combined with possible sponsor exemptions will get them into enough events in 2010 to skip Q-School.

Too bad about David Duval losing his tour card. I was actually amazed that he was as high as 125th on the money list going into last week’s tournament. I guess that second place finish at the Open was enough to get him that high because he sure didn’t do much else this year. I just read where he’s planning on going to Q-school, but said that it’s not something he’s really focused on. Therein lies the problem!
