Lovemark, the 21-year-old 2007 NCAA champion who turned pro this year following his junior season at Southern Cal, tied for second in the PGA Tour's Frys.com Open (losing in a playoff) last week. On Friday, he stumbled across the finish line with a 77 in the Pinehurst, N.C., qualifier. But it didn't matter - Lovemark had played so well in the first three rounds that he still placed tied for eighth.
Tryon's journey back from golf oblivion continues after he finished fourth in the Lakeland, Fla., qualifier, partially on the strength of a second-round 62. Tryon turned pro at age 16 and was only 17 years old when he made it through the 2001 Q-School finals to earn his card for the 2002 PGA Tour season. Health issues limited his play to only six tournaments in 2002, but he played a full season on a medical exemption in 2003 - making just four of 21 cuts. Since then, Tryon has mostly bounced around mini-tours, and spent the past year working at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Orlando, Fla.
Last year, Tryon's attempt to make it out of first-stage qualifying ended with a third-round 87. This year, his scores were 71-62-71-69.
One other first-stage qualifier, in Lantana, Texas, wraps up Saturday after being delayed a day by rain. Six second-stage qualifiers are scheduled Nov. 18-21. The scores and schedules can be found on the PGA Tour's Q-School homepage.
