The PGA Tour officially announced today what was first reported last week: The end of the Buick Open. At least it went out on a high note, with Tiger Woods as its final champion.

Buick's sponsorship agreements with the PGA Tour - it also sponsored the Buick Invitational, the early season tournament at Torrey Pines - are ending a year early. But the parties part on good terms, with the tour's announcement stating the company and the tour "remain in discussions regarding future sponsorship possibilities."

The announcement also states:

An announcement from the PGA Tour will be made Wednesday regarding a replacement for the Buick Open's tournament date on the 2010 PGA Tour schedule. The Tour, meanwhile, remains very interested in maintaining a tournament presence in Michigan and is currently exploring opportunities.

The PGA Tour and the Century Club of San Diego will continue discussions regarding sponsorship of the Invitational.

The replacement for the Buick Open is expected to be a new tournament based at the historic Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, a past home to the Solheim Cup and the longtime home to Sam Snead.

What was the Buick Invitational in San Diego will continue, but must find a new title sponsor. Buick had been involved with the PGA Tour for 51 years, at one point sponsoring four tournaments a year.

Update: PGA Tour announces replacement - the Greenbrier Classic.
