Kerr, Creamer Atop Leaderboard Halfway Through US Women's Open

Friday July 10, 2009
Cristie Kerr is the leader at the midpoint of the 2009 U.S. Women's Open with a 3-under total of 139. Paula Creamer is one stroke back in second following the second round on Friday at Saucon Valley Country Club.

As is the usual at this stage of major championships, the leaderboard is also sprinkled with relative unknowns: Jean Reynolds, in third, is a 2-time winner on the Futures Tour this year; Giulia Sergas, tied for fourth, has never won in six full seasons on tour and her best finish this year is 22nd.

Then there's 14-year-old amateur Alexis Thompson in the Top 10.

More suprising to me than some of the names on the leaderboard are some of those missing. Most notably: Yani Tseng, who was playing well entering this championship and whose power game seemed well-suited to Saucon Valley. But Tseng missed the cut with two miserable rounds.

Other notables missing the cut included Se Ri Pak, Angela Stanford, Jeong Jang, Katherine Hull, Angela Park and Laura Diaz (who finished 20-over par).

Lorena Ochoa lost a lot of ground with a woeful 79 on Friday and is at 148, nine strokes off the lead.
