The Tiger Effect In Action

Monday July 6, 2009
Why do golf television broadcasts spend so much time showing us Tiger Woods even when he is (rarely) out of contention? Here's why:

CBS said on Monday that Sunday’s final round of the tournament Woods hosts earned a 4.6 rating and 11 share, up from the 1.5/3 a year ago.

That's triple last year's AT&T National, when a pretty exciting young player named Anthony Kim was winning.

It was the highest-rated CBS golf broadcast (not including majors) since the 2008 Buick Invitational. Which was won by ... what's his name? ... Tiger Woods.

If you're one of those people who complains about Tiger's domination of TV broadcasts, well, stop. You'll enjoy the broadcasts more if you just accept the inevitable.

Was it a penalty for Tiger to strike the sand with his club in anger when he still had his ball in a sand bunker on the same hole? Seems Rory McIlroy was scolded but not penalized for similar action earlier in year.

no penalty since it cant be construed as testing the condition of the sand

After watching Tiger Woods win his namesake event at Congressional, it seems to me that a M.A.S.H. unit for the other players would have been appropriate. Watching the final round was akin to a delicate medical procedure by a skilled surgeon, using the appropriate tools, knowing exactly what he was going to do next, and certain of the ultimate outcome. Only an incredible 62 by Hunter Mahan kept the Sunday operation anything other than the normal final round stroll for Dr. Woods.

Hope they take Blue Cross/Blue Shield in a couple of weeks at Turnberry when Tiger kicks some more butt!
