Tiger's Niece Shoots 75 in LPGA Debut
Cheyenne Woods, coming off her freshman season as a member of the Wake Forest University women's golf team, carded a 75 in her first-ever appearance in an LPGA Tour event on Thursday at the Wegmans LPGA.With play suspended by weather as this is written, and many golfers still on the course, that puts Cheyenne around 120th place. But she fared better in the first round than major championship winner Birdie Kim (76) and defending Wegmans champion Eun-Hee Ji (80).
How does Cheyenne's debut compare with her Uncle Tiger's? Tiger Woods was 16 years old when he played his first PGA Tour event, the 1992 Nissan Los Angeles Open at Riviera. And Tiger opened with a 72, followed with a 75, and missed the cut.
Cheyenne is the daughter of Earl Woods Jr., Tiger's half-brother. She got into the Wegmans via a sponsorship exemption. (See this earlier post to read more about Cheyenne's golf career to date.)
Another player making her LPGA Tour debut - as a professional, that is - this week is Amanda Blumenherst, the three-time NCAA Player of the Year. She opened with a 70.

Pretty good showing for Ms. Woods — better than a lot of people were expecting. Well done.
