Phil Mickelson said today that he will "most likely" skip the British Open next month with his wife, Amy, set to begin treatment soon for breast cancer.
Amy Mickelson's treatments are scheduled to begin with surgery on July 1. The British Open begins July 16.
In a news conference at Bethpage Black for the U.S. Open today, Mickelson said:
"I'm putting everything I have into (the U.S. Open) because I don't anticipate being able to play for a little while. ... We'll have a great family vacation next week and we have kind of a game plan on moving forward."
Mickelson said August will probably be the earliest he will return to golf following Amy's surgery. The final major of the season, the PGA Championship, begins Aug. 13.
