U.S. Open Round 1, 2 Pairings, Tee Times

First things first: Tiger Woods tees off in the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black at 8:06 a.m. Thursday from the No. 1 tee, paired with Masters champion Angel Cabrera and British Open and PGA Championship winner Padraig Harrington.

And if Woods has the kind of driving week at Bethpage that he had two weeks ago in The Memorial (what Jack Nicklaus called Woods' best driving week ever), he'll run away with this championship. But if Woods' driving is more like the driving we've seen from him in most other weeks - inconsistent and not very accurate - the 2009 U.S. Open is up for grabs.

Second things second: Phil Mickelson is grouped with Ernie Els and Retief Goosen and starts from the No. 10 tee on Thursday at 1:36 p.m.

The USGA had its usual fun with the groupings. For example, there's the Heartthrob Group: Sergio Garcia, Camilo Villegas and Adam Scott. The Francophile Group: Thomas Levet, Jean-Francois Lucquin and Raphael Jacquelin, all Frenchmen. The Scandinavian Group: Soren Kjeldsen, Soren Hansen and Peter Hanson, two Danes and Swede.

One of the other most-promising groups is the one with Geoff Ogilvy, Jim Furyk and Paul Casey. The full groupings and start times are below the fold.
