This Week: The Memorial

Monday June 1, 2009
Jack Nicklaus' tournament, The Memorial, takes place this week on the PGA Tour, and at Jack Nicklaus' place, Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The club is built on land where young Nicklaus was taken hunting by his father decades ago.

Each year The Memorial pays tribute to golfing greats, a tournament committee selecting the honorees. The full list of honorees can be viewed here. This year, Nicklaus and The Memorial honor JoAnne Carner (a k a Big Mama) and Jack Burke Jr.

Tiger Woods is playing this week. And so is Nicklaus - sort of. Nicklaus and Woods, plus Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington, Anthony Kim, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry and Camilo Villegas, are playing two 9-hole Skins Games (one foursome per competition) on Wednesday to benefit the First Tee program. The Skins Games will be televised on the Golf Channel.

Check The Memorial tournament profile page for the list of past champions and more tourney info and trivia.

For the first time in many years, even though I don’t live far from the course, I’m heading to Muirfield on Wednesday just to see Tiger and Jack together. And although it will be televised, I think the interaction will be a whole lot better to watch in person. Besides, I don’t think we’ll get to see these two greats together that much more.

The fact that Jack and Tiger will play on Wednesday is enough for me to make the trip to Dublin and I live in Cleveland! In fact, I took a day of vacation just to come see the skins game. The sad part, is that I can’t take off any more work to actually the the real tournament. Oh well, I’ll still take it!

Brent…2 weeks ago at the BMW in Wentworth, Ben Curtis went 6 under his last 4 holes…2 birdies and 2 eagles….i am a 2 handicapper and think this is an incredible feat…though when i blogged on another website, others (I assume not very astute golfers) claimed this was nothing…i say it is historical, though can’t find records of this anywhere…maybe it has been done before, though i would suspect it is the equivalent of a 59 for 18 which only 3 golfers have done(though I do call Shegeki Muriyama, MR 58, for his unfathomable score a few years ago in US Open qualifying)
