Texas A&M Wins NCAA Men's Championship

Saturday May 30, 2009
The NCAA Men's Golf Championship this year tried a new format for crowning its team champion, and that format produced an exciting finish. Texas A&M's No. 1 player, Bronson Burgoon, had lost four consecutive holes to Andrew Landry of Arkansas in their deciding match, but recovered to nearly hole out on the 18th hole, knocking a 120-yard approach from deep rough to within inches of the cup. Burgoon won the hole and with it, the title for the Aggies.

In years past all competitors played four rounds of stroke play to crown both the individual and team champions (team scores being determined by sending out five players per team and counting the four lowest of those scores for each round).

This year, three rounds of stroke play crowned the individual champion, Matt Hill of North Carolina State. And the Top 8 teams at that point advanced to match play.

Texas A&M upset second-seeded Arizona State in the quarterfinals, then beat Michigan in the semifinals. Against Arkansas in the finals, the Aggies won 3-2:

  • Bronson Burgoon, A&M, def. Andrew Landry, Arkansas, 1-up
  • Andrea Pavan, A&M, def. David Lingmerth, Arkansas, 7 and 6
  • John Hurley, A&M, def. Ethan Tracy, Arkansas, 6 and 4
  • Jason Cuthbertson, Arkansas, def. Matt Van Zandt, A&M, 3 and 1
  • Jamie Marshall, Arkansas, def. Conrad Shindler, A&M, 3 and 2
