There has been a PGA Tour tournament at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth going back decades, but in recent years it has been through multiple name changes. It became known as the Dean & DeLuca Invitational beginning in 2016 when the chain of upscale grocery stores took over the title sponsorship from Crowne Plaza.

But in 2018, the tournament name reverted to Fort Worth Invitational when a new title sponsor wasn't found by tourney time. In 2019, the Charles Schwab financial company took over as title sponsor, and the tournament gained a new name: Charles Schwab Challenge. This event has has traditionally been referted to as "The Colonial" by players and fans alike, and "Colonial"—from its host course, Colonial Country Club—was always part of its official name until 2016.

The Colonial is part of the tour's Texas swing, typically paired on the Spring part of the schedule in back-to-back weeks with the Byron Nelson Championship. The Colonial is played in Fort Worth; the Nelson in Dallas. And the Colonial was always associated with Ben Hogan, although he never had an official role as tournament host.

Facts, Figures and Trivia about The Colonial

  • The Colonial has been played at Colonial Country Club since 1946. That makes it the longest-running "regular" (as opposed to the major Masters) Tour event still at its original site.
  • Colonial Country Club is nicknamed "Hogan's Alley" because of the success Ben Hogan had at the course.
  • Hogan won The Colonial the first two times it was played (1946-47), won back-to-back again in 1952-53, and won a fifth time in 1959. Hogan's five wins is still the tournament record.
  • No other golfer has won Colonial in back-to-back years.
  • Hogan's fifth win here, in 1959, was his final PGA Tour victory.
  • In 2003, Annika Sorenstam received a sponsor's exemption into the Colonial field, becoming the first woman since 1945 to play a PGA Tour event. She shot 71-74 and missed the cut.
  • Like at The Masters where the winner receives the Green Jacket, the Colonial also presents the winner with a jacket. The Colonial champion gets a tartan jacket.
