This Week: Valero Texas Open

Sunday May 10, 2009
The Valero Texas Open takes place this week, being played for the second time in six months due to a date change. The tournament - which annually is among the leaders in money raised for charity on the PGA Tour, and in several years has set the tour record in that category - was moved from the Fall Series to a much more coveted Spring spot on the schedule.

That move doesn't just have to do with the tournament's charitable prowess, however, but also with the fact that the tourney in 2010 is moving to a new course. The current course, The Resort Course at La Cantera in San Antonio, won't be much missed by most players. A very tough walk, La Cantera has been named the least-liked course on tour in several surveys of PGA Tour pros.

But they won't have La Cantera to kick around much longer. In 2010, the Texas Open moves to a new TPC course, owned by the PGA Tour and designed by Greg Norman. That course is due to open just in time to host the Texas Open in San Antonio next year.

The Texas Open is one of the oldest events on the PGA Tour. Check the Texas Open tournament page for the list of winners dating to 1922, plus more tourney info and trivia. And watch for tons of birdies this week.
