Kim Kouwabunpat's "Big Break PEI" Diary, Episode 3

Tuesday May 5, 2009
big break diary (Editor's Note: Kim Kouwabunpat is a contestant on the Golf Channel series "Big Break Prince Edward Island," which airs on Monday nights. Following each episode, Kim is writing a diary on About.com Golf. Below is Kim's diary following the third episode. See also: previous entries.)

Was it as intense for you viewers out there as it was for me to relive this episode? Jeez! I can't say that I wasn't disappointed with my performance throughout the entire show. I don't think I recognized any of my swings - they were all nerve-stricken, quick, out-of-body experiences. The first time I felt like I put a smoother, more natural swing on the ball was my first tee shot on No. 18 in last night's elimination challenge. Alas, it was a little too late ...

When going over that day in my mind, I really look at the head-to-head match against Brenda in the morning as the reason I was in the elimination to begin with. One inexcusably awful wedge shot made the difference.

The driving challenge was next and I knew that my competition against Aaron, Derek, Brian and Gerina - with only one immunity spot left - was going to be tough. Within the grid, the longer you can hit the ball in the fairway, the more points can be accumulated. Although this challenge required accuracy with distance, I felt like I had a disadvantage since those guys can hit it a long way and one of the only girls I'd have trouble outdriving is Gerina (although Blair has a long ball, too).

In the elimination round, it was just me and the boys! (Not such a bad position to be in during other circumstances, eh? hehe) Soooo ... here I am in a challenge that rewards greens in regulation. In the past, I've struggled with this statistic in my game and have always been a scrambler with a great short game - chipping, flop shots, sand saves, etc. My confidence was slightly shaken going into the elimination. And I couldn’t eat anything during lunch because I lost all appetite again and my stomach was still in major knots. I felt like throwing up over every shot!

Clearly, my wedge game was a huge disappointment! I know I came up short of the circle a few times which hurt quite a bit, but I was in-between clubs and calculated adrenaline into the mix. Since that day back in September, I've really worked hard on my wedge game and can proudly say that it has improved dramatically. Although I wasn't happy with my performance, this was an incredible experience on "Big Break XI" that has truly changed me as a golfer and taught me a lot about myself. The nerves I experienced on the show were unlike anything I have ever felt in my career! I'm sure other Big Breakers would agree.

I hope you all enjoyed watching me in the first three episodes. Don't worry, I'm still smiling and as I said on the show, "It's not the last you’re going to see of me ..."
