Annika Says Farewell - But Forever?
The good news for golf fans: We'll see her at least once more, anyway, in an exhibition planned for early in 2009 in which Sorenstam will play with Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and, most likely, Natalie Gulbis. It will b be a "celebrate Annika" event in Florida.
Sorenstam finished the Dubai Ladies Masters tied for seventh. She led after the second round, but stumbled in the third before recovering with a solid 71 in what might be her final round of tournament golf.
The story is well-known by now: Sorenstam announced earlier in 2008 that she planned to "step away" from competitive golf at the end of 2008. She made a point to avoid saying she was retiring; she also made a point to leave the door open to a possible return at a later date.
Many people, including me, have speculated that Annika will be back on tour several years down the road.
But following the conclusion of the Dubai Ladies Masters, Sorenstam came as close as she yet has to quashing that idea. She didn't completely rule it out, but her words make it seem as if an eventual return is not something she expects to happen:
"Like I said, this is most likely my last press conference, so I guess, you know, thinking about that is a little weird."You know, life goes on, and I have said it before. I feel very content and very happy about my decision to move on. ...
"I know the time is right. ... But new chapters - you close the door and you open another one. I'm glad I have a chance to do that."
