Ballesteros' Tumor is Malignant

Thursday October 23, 2008
The Madrid hospital treating golf legend Seve Ballesteros after his diagnosis of a brain tumor revealed on Thursday that the tumor is malignant.

Ballesteros has been hospitalized since Oct. 6. On Oct. 16, part of the tumor was removed. Since then, Ballesteros has experienced swelling in his brain and underwent an additional surgery in an attempt to address that problem.

In its statement, La Paz Hospital said new surgery will take place Friday to remove the rest of the tumor, a surgery the hospital described as "of great complexity."

More from The Associated Press

Update: Doctors say the third surgery has been successfully completed.
