Finally, Another Win for Lorena Ochoa

Sunday September 28, 2008
One measure of true greatness is when the golf media begin describing a player as being in a slump even though that golfer has several wins during the year. In recent years, only three golfers have qualified for this "honor": Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa.

Ochoa has been in a "slump" this year despite the fact that she had six victories going into the Navistar LPGA Classic this past weekend. It's true that none of those wins happened past May, when Ochoa had to deal with the loss of a uncle to whom she was close, and some other family issues.

Still, she leads the LPGA in wins, money, scoring average and Player of the Year points. If that's a slump, sign me up!

Well, not to worry: On Sunday at the Navistar, Ochoa won for the seventh time in 2008, defeating Candie Kung and Cristie Kerr in a playoff. The "slump" is over.

The victory is the 24th of Ochoa's young LPGA career, which ties her with Se Ri Pak and Donna Caponi on the LPGA's all-time wins list. She still trails those two Hall of Famers, however, in majors: Pak has five, Caponi four and Ochoa two.
