European Ryder Cup Team Finalized; No Monty

By , About.com GuideAugust 31, 2008

Follow me on:

Oliver Wilson finished 10th in the European Tour's Johnnie Walker Championship on Sunday, nailing down the 10th and final automatic spot on the European Ryder Cup team. And then Captain Nick Faldo made his two captain's picks, and the team is finalized.

In: Ian Poulter and Paul Casey. Out: Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke.

With Monty left off the team, we'll have to listen now to golf writers and broadcasters attemping to psychoanalyze the strained relationship between Faldo and Montgomerie. But fact is, Monty just hasn't done much to force Faldo's hand. Of course, Poulter and Casey both missed the cut this week on the PGA Tour. But while Monty is certainly one of the best players in Ryder Cup history, Poulter and Casey are simply better golfers at this point in their respective careers.

A better argument can be made for Clarke, also a Euro Ryder Cup stalwart, who has two wins this year. I might have chosen Clarke over Casey. But any way you look at it, Faldo added two excellent players to his squad.

U.S. captain Paul Azinger announces his four captain's choices on Tuesday. So here are how the teams shape up now, eight players for the U.S. and the full 12-man team for Europe:

Team USA
Phil Mickelson
Stewart Cink
Kenny Perry
Jim Furyk
Anthony Kim
Justin Leonard
Ben Curtis
Boo Weekley
Team Europe
Padraig Harrington
Sergio Garcia
Lee Westwood
Henrik Stenson
Robert Karlsson
Miguel Angel Jimenez
Graeme McDowell
Justin Rose
Soren Hansen
Oliver Wilson
Ian Poulter
Paul Casey
