U.S. Women's Amateur Rolls Into Day 2 of Match Play

Thursday August 7, 2008
There have been a couple of surprises so far at the U.S. Women's Amateur, which today enters its second day of match play (which consists of morning and afternoon sessions, whittling the field from 32 to eight).

The first came before match play started, when 2006 champion Kimberly Kim failed to advance out of stroke-play qualifying. On Wednesday, in first-round matches, there were two ousters of note: Tiffany Joh, the two-time U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion and one of the best collegiate players, lost, 1-down, to Jane Chin; and 13-year-old wunderkind Alexis Thompson - who won the U.S. Girls Junior a couple weeks ago - lost, 1-down, to Jennifer Harano.

But there's still a 13-year-old in the field: Pearl Jin, who, like Thompson, burst on the scene last year at age 12, won her first-round match. As did co-medalists Stephanie Na of Australia and three-time NCAA Player of the Year Amanda Blumenherst of Duke University.

The USGA offers live scoring and previous results here.
