Mickelson and Singh Trivia from the Bridgestone Invitational
Trivia question: Who is the only golfer with at least two PGA Tour wins each of the last five years (including 2008)? It's not Tiger Woods. It's Mickelson, who will be trying for win No. 3 in 2008 on Sunday.
Singh has yet to win this year on the PGA Tour, but if he does win the Bridgestone it will mark the 13th season in which he has won. He's also trying to become - random factoid alert - the first golfer over 38 years old to win a World Golf Championships tournament. Three times previously in his career, Vijay has won a tournament the week before a major (the PGA Championship takes place next week).
Mickelson has a reputation for being susceptible to the meldtown - for blowing his share of tournaments. But his record as a frontrunner is actually quite good.
Twenty-seven times in his career, Phil has held or shared the 54-hole lead in a PGA Tour event. And 20 of those times he emerged the winner. His final-round scoring average in those 27 tournaments is 69.5, and he really only played poorly in one of them. Six of the seven times Mickelson failed to win, he finished second or third.
And did you know that Mickelson is one of only 10 golfers in PGA Tour history to win a tournament played immediately preceding a major, and then win the major as well? From the PGA Tour, here's the list of players to do so:
- 2007 - Tiger Woods won Bridgestone Invitational followed by the PGA Championship
- 2006 - Phil Mickelson won BellSouth Classic followed by Masters
- 1988 - Sandy Lyle won Greater Greensboro Open followed by the Masters
- 1971 - Lee Trevino won the Canadian Open followed by the British Open
- 1959 - Art Wall won the Azalea Open followed by the Masters
- 1949 - Sam Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open followed by the Masters
- 1946 - Ben Hogan won the Winnipeg Open followed by the PGA Championship
- 1945 - Byron Nelson won the Chicago Victory Open followed by the PGA Championship
- 1939 - Ralph Guldahl won the Greater Greensboro Open followed by the Masters
