Bear Shows Up at U.S. Senior Open, and We Don't Mean Nicklaus
Saturday August 2, 2008
The USGA will have wildlife officials on the course throughout the remainder of the U.S. Senior Open after a black bear showed up on the 13th fairway during Friday's second round.
The bear crossed the fairway at The Broadmoor in front of Bernhard Langer and on-course commentator Dottie Pepper, then scoped out the gallery. The Associated Press article says:
Although tournament officials were prepared to tranquilize the animal and stop play were it to become aggressive or spooked, after several minutes the bear crawled through a drainage pipe on the ninth hole that leads to the West Course, then went through another drainage pipe and into the wilderness, leaving unnerved galleries and golfers behind.
To see a photo of the bear crossing, go to the USGA's Senior Open photo gallery and click into the gallery labeled "Second Round Action."
