Inbee Park isn't yet 20 years old, but she's a major championship winner. The 19-year-old South Korean native and Las Vegas resident earned her first LPGA Tour victory and first major on Sunday, closing with a 2-under-par round of 71 for the U.S. Women's Open trophy.
Park displaces her idol, Se Ri Pak, as the youngest-ever winner of the U.S. Women's Open. In fact, watching the then-20-year-old Pak win in 1998 is what inspired Park to take up golf. Three years later, she was one of the best junior golfers in the world.
Now, she is one of the best professionals in the world of women's golf. And it's a world of women's golf that is overflowing with young talent. Park's victory provides a great picture into just how much young talent there is in women's golf these days. Consider this: While she is the youngest-ever U.S. Women's Open champion, Park is just the third-youngest women's major champion.
The second-youngest on that list is Yani Tseng, who won the LPGA Championship a few weeks ago. And the record-holder as youngest women's major champion is Morgan Pressel, who won the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship. So the three youngest women's major champions have all come since 2007, and two of them accomplished the feat in the two most recent women's majors.
