U.S. Women's Open Groupings, Tee Times

Tuesday June 24, 2008
The U.S. Women's Open tees off Thursday at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn. And there are two groupings in particular that are likely to draw a lot of attention in Rounds 1 and 2:

  • Cristie Kerr, a-Maria Jose Uribe, Lorena Ochoa
  • Annika Sorenstam, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen
A betting person could do worse than to wager that the winner will come from one of these two pairings. (Maria Jose Uribe plays collegiately at UCLA and is in the field - and in the spotlight pairing with the defending champ - Kerr - and British Open champ - Ochoa - by virtue of being the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champion.)

A couple other very good groupings of which to take note:

  • Karrie Webb, Yani Tseng, Christina Kim
  • Inbee Park, Morgan Pressel, Jane Park
The second of those two is particularly intriguing to me. Inbee Park is playing very well right now, Jane Park has a game tailor-made for U.S. Open conditions, and Morgan Pressel is, well, Morgan Pressel. These three are old friends and competitors from the junior ranks.

How about sleepers? Here are two groups that could have several of their players in contention - perhaps even winning - on Sunday:

  • Angela Stanford, Lindsey Wright, Jeong Jang
  • Jee Young Lee, Leta Lindley, Maria Hjorth
Lindley is the only golfer of those six I can't see getting into the mix in the final round. The other five all represent excellent choices to contend.

For the full pairings and tee times,
