Tiger Woods Outlasts Rocco Mediate for U.S. Open Title
Monday June 16, 2008
Tiger Woods birdied the final hole of regulation on Sunday at the U.S. Open, and that forced an 18-hole playoff on Monday with Rocco Mediate. Then Woods birdied the final hole of that 18-hole playoff, to force still more golf. That 18th-hole birdie on Monday tied Mediate again, and sent the playoff into sudden-death overtime.
And on that extra hole - the 19th of the day - Woods finally managed to outdo the scrappy Mediate, securing a par to Mediate's bogey. And so Tiger Woods is the 2008 U.S. Open champion.
What does this victory do for Woods' numbers?
- He now has three U.S. Open titles. (U.S. Open records)
- He has 14 major championships total, trailing Jack Nicklaus' record for professional majors by just four. (Career majors list)
- He has 65 career PGA Tour wins, moving one ahead of Ben Hogan. (Career wins list)
