U.S. Open, Round 3: Tiger Takes the Lead

Saturday June 14, 2008
Tiger Woods made a long, curling, downhill eagle putt on the 18th hole to seize the lead at the U.S. Open on Saturday. He takes a 1-stroke lead into Sunday's final round:

Round 3 Leaders

Lee Westwood, 211
Rocco Mediate, 212
Geoff Ogilvy, 214
D.J. Trahan, 214
Hunter Mahan, 215
Camilo Villegas, 215
Robert Allenby, 215
Miguel Angel Jimenez, 215
Robert Karlsson, 215

Another stroke back, at 216, is a group that includes Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and Mike Weir.

Woods posted a 70 on Saturday, but it was one of the most memorable 70s you'll ever see. Woods opened with a double-bogey and mostly treaded water after that. Until the 13th hole. Then he rolled in an eagle putt that was even longer and perhaps more unlikely than the one he made later on No. 18. And on the 17th, his ball short of the green in thick rough, Woods' chip shot hopped once, hit the flagstick and dropped into the cup. Three signature moments over the final six holes.

And he did it all while clearly in much discomfort because of his surgically repaired left knee. The knee is definitely causing pain. How the knee holds up on Sunday may be the key question in Tiger's quest for his third U.S. Open title.
