U.S. Open, Round 2: Tiger Makes a Move

Friday June 13, 2008
Stuart Appleby rolled in a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to take a 1-stroke lead after the second round of the U.S. Open on Friday at Torrey Pines Golf Course. But the story of the day was - as it so often is - Tiger Woods.

Woods began the day at 1-over, and made four bogeys on his first nine holes of the second round to make the turn at 3-over. Then he caught fire, reeled off five straight 3's, wound up with five birdies on his back nine and a score of 30. That gave him a 3-under 68 on the day, and propelled him from 20th at the start of the day to second by the end of it.

Round 2 Leaders
Stuart Appleby, 139
Robert Karlsson, 140
Rocco Mediate, 140
Tiger Woods, 140
Miguel Angel Jimenez, 141
Davis Love III, 141
D.J. Trahan, 141
Lee Westwood, 141

For Woods' playing partner, Phil Mickelson, it was a different story. Mickelson struggled throughout the second round hitting fairways and greens. His short game saved him on a couple holes with great chips, and he made a couple long par saves. But Mickelson still wound up with a 75 and is at 4-over 146.

Other notables: Ernie Els, 142; Geoff Ogilvy, 142; Luke Donald, 142; Jim Furyk, 145; Padraig Harrington, 145; Rory Sabbatini, 145; Sergio Garcia, 146; Adam Scott, 146; Vijay Singh, 149. Full scores
