Memorial, Ginn Tribute Honor Past Stars

Wednesday May 28, 2008
Jack Nicklaus' Memorial tournament and the Ginn Tribute, hosted by Annika Sorenstam, have something in common: Each year, both events honor golf stars of the past. Nicklaus' tournament was founded with the idea of "memorializing" (hence the name) and remembering the best golfers - male and female alike - throughout the game's history.

And when Sorenstam came on board as host of the Ginn Tribute, she had the same idea in mind. The Memorial has been honoring golf's past since its founding in 1976. The Ginn Tribute started just last year, when its first group of honorees were the 13 founding members of the LPGA.

Read the following profiles of the golfers being honored at each event this week:

Tony Jacklin and Jack Nicklaus will forever be tied together by the 1969 Ryder Cup. That's where Nicklaus and Jacklin were in the final singles match, and reached the last hole tied. Nicklaus made a 10-foot birdie putt, then conceded Jacklin's putt - ensuring the match and the overall Ryder Cup ended in a tie. It's an act that has become simply referred to as "the concession." And that's also the name of a golf course that Nicklaus and Jacklin designed together Florida. Check out the gallery:
