Who is the "Fittest Guy in America"?
The image to the right might provide a clue: The "Fittest Guy in America" is Tiger Woods, according to Men's Fitness magazine. Hey, if they were going to put a golfer on the list, John Daly sure wasn't going to be the choice. The June/July 2008 issue of Men's Fitness, which appeared on newsstands May 19, included the magazine's listing of "The 25 Fittest Guys in America." For the first time, one person was singled out as the fittest, and that was Tiger. Others making the list include actors Will Smith, Daniel Craig, and Shemar Moore; athletes Brady Quinn, Chase Utley, and Dwight Howard; rappers Romeo Miller and Flo Rida; television host Mark Steines; and Sen. Barack Obama.
The image appearing here is a scan of the Men's Fitness page devoted to Tiger's selection as No. 1. The magazine's blurb about Woods' selection begins this way:
Because he made us care about a sport we didn’t think was, well, a sport. Because he raised the bar and made pro golfers care about winning again. Because he made himself better, even while he was clearly the best. Because he’s walking history. Because even the icons say he’s the best. Because he loves the gym. Because he’s the first golfer we’ve ever thought of as an athlete.

We may never see the likes of him again!!
Correction: Golf is NOT a sport, it is a competition. Most people make this mistake. To be a sport, the activity must have a “active defense,” i.e., someone or others who ‘prevent’ you from scoring a goal. Think about it, it will make sense to you. Bill
Most of what they say is true isn’t it. Undoubtedly Tiger Woods has changed the way the game of golf is perceived and he has had an unbelievable impact. Golf has always had an image problem, a deterrent which prevented it from expanding its fan base. Tiger Woods came on the scene and completely changed that. There is just something about him. Of course he is a master of his trade but there is something more to it.
It is not just the game that has got the people to come in, there is that aura associated with Tiger that has the power to attract people. I know a lot of print space and cyber space has been used up making the same point but you cannot stress enough on the kind of impact he has had on the game.
He has ensured that pros are treated as athletes when they step on to the tee and not a couple of men trying to spend a nice easy time on the course, in the process trying to win a tournament. The game gets its due now. It’s not just a mere pastime for the uber rich to spend their weekends, it’s a sport where a Sunday afternoon is perhaps the most stressful time of the week!
Now we just hope that the Fittest guy in America is back in action at the earliest. Golf just isn’t fun without Tiger. We need him on the course, irrespective of whether he is winning or not.
