The Week: Byron Nelson Championship

Monday April 21, 2008
Trivia question: Who won the first Byron Nelson Championship? Answer: Duh! Byron Nelson! OK, that's a bit of a trick question. Nelson won the Dallas Open in 1944, the first year it was played. And the Dallas Open later turned into what we now know as the EDS Byron Nelson Championship.

Mr. Nelson himself is no longer a part of this championship in a physical sense, having passed away several years ago. But his spirit of generosity lives on. Nelson's event was one of the first to generate huge sums of money for charities, an area in which all PGA Tour events now compete for bragging rights.

Check out the Byron Nelson Championship profile to find the list of past champions along with other tournament info and trivia.
