Four In a Row for Lorena Ochoa

Ho-hum, another LPGA tournament, another Lorena Ochoa victory. Ochoa claimed the Ginn Open on Sunday for her fourth straight victory, and fifth of 2008.

Her four consecutive wins have come in consecutive weeks on the LPGA Tour, too, tying a tour record. Mickey Wright, Kathy Whitworth and Annika Sorenstam also won in four straight weeks. Ochoa is still one win away from the overall longest winning streak on the LPGA Tour, however. Nancy Lopez and Sorenstam each posted wins in five straight tournaments in which they played.

Ochoa hasn't been just squeaking by in her five wins in 2008. She's been winning by big margins:

  • HSBC Women's Champions: Won by 11
  • Safeway International: Won by 7
  • Kraft Nabisco Championship: Won by 5
  • Corona Championship: Won by 11
  • Ginn Open: Won by 3
While the 3-stroke margin in the Ginn Open doesn't look as impressive as the others on that list, keep in mind that the third-place golfers were eight strokes behind Ochoa. She separated herself from the field again, but this time there was one golfer (and one golfer only) who almost managed to keep up.

For Ochoa, it was career win No. 22, putting her just two behind Se Ri Pak and Donna Caponi on the LPGA career wins list.
