The Par-3 Contest at The Masters

Wednesday April 9, 2008
The Par-3 Contest takes place today at Augusta National Golf Club, and for the first time ever, the annual Masters Week event will be televised. ESPN has coverage from 3-5 p.m. (Eastern time); plus, the event will be covered at www.masters.org from 2-5 p.m.

It's true that no Par-3 Contest winner has ever gone on to win The Masters in the same year. Of course, it's also true that some Par-3 Contest winners haven't really been contenders. For example, Jerry Pate won in 2005 even though it's been years since he played in Masters. The Par-3 Contest is bit, shall we say, unofficial. Golfers who aren't entered in The Masters sometimes play (if they are guests of the club or of entered golfers), and some Augusta National members take part, too. And the Masters entrants who do choose to play often have one of their kids as caddie.
