Customizing the weight properties of driver heads has been mainstream since TaylorMade introduced the original r7 quad driver in 2004. And new rules by the USGA permitting other customizable, interchangeable parts on drivers should lead to more options for consumers.TaylorMade's new r7 CGB Max Limited driver now combines changeable weight screws with changeable shafts to result in a driver that can be customized to produce 1,071 different sets of launch conditions.
How is that possible? The r7 CGB Max Limited comes with three weight ports and nine weighted screws - two 1-gram, plus one 4-gram, 6-gram, 8-gram, 10-gram, 12-gram, 14-gram and 16-gram screws - that alone produce 357 possible combinations.
But the r7 CGB Max Limited also comes with three different shafts that can be swapped out through the use of a custom torque wrench. The three shafts combined with the weighted screws give the golfer plenty to play around with when it comes to changing the center of gravity location and tinkering with the launch conditions.
The three shafts included in the boxed kit are the 75-gram Fujikura Rombax, the 65-gram Mitsubishi Diamana White Board and the 55-gram Matrix Ozik XCon. The different designs, and therefore different performances, of the shafts can help produce, respectively, a low-spin, medium launch angle; reduced spin, lower launch and more feel; and high-launch with low spin.
The TaylorMade r7 CGB Max Limited driver won't be on the market until early April, and will carry and MSRP of $999. Read the news release for more info.
