"Fore Inventors Only" was the "reality" series on The Golf Channel that focused on golf inventions. The winning product won shelf space in Golfsmith stores for one year, an infomercial and free TV time for that infomercial. The ClubGlider - a travel bag on wheels for easier lugging of the ol' golf luggage - was not the winner. It, and its inventor, Gary Sherrell (both pictured), seemed to be the favorites of the three judges, particularly of Stina Sternberg. But in the final voting by the public, the public chose a smaller, more broadly appealing, and lest costly item called Club Caddy, a clip-on gagdet for keeping clubs off the turf.
So what happened to the other finalists? Did being part of "Fore Inventors Only" provide any breaks?
There's a good chance that the ClubGlider would have done just fine regardless - given the "d'oh! why didn't I think of that?" nature and apparent quality of the idea and the inventor - but the travel bag has now been licensed by Sun Mountain, longtime and very respected maker of golf bags and outerwear. I'd say that qualifies as a "big break" for Sherrell as a result of the Golf Channel series.
Sun Mountain will "introduce" the ClubGlider at the 2008 PGA Merchandise Show in a couple months. For more on the ClubGlider, visit www.theclubglider.com.
