Amateur Wins on LPGA Tour
Stacy Lewis, a senior at the University of Arkansas, claimed the trophy at the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship on Sunday, making her the first amateur to win an LPGA trophy since JoAnne Carner in 1969.
But the victory comes with a major asterisk. Heavy rains and course conditions that were considered dangerous for fans forced the LPGA to cut the tournament short. Only 18 holes were played, and a tournament must consist of at least 36 holes to be counted as an official LPGA event.
Therefore, while Lewis gets the trophy, she does not get credit for an official win on the LPGA Tour. So Carner remains the last amateur to record an official tournament win on the LPGA.
Lewis, by the way, is certainly a golfer to watch on the women's side. The 2007 NCAA champion, Lewis finished in the Top 10 at the Kraft Nabisco Championship at the start of this season and by all appearances has a very bright future.
