Cristie Kerr can no longer be part of the discussion when talking about the best women golfers yet to win a major. Lorena Ochoa, unfortunately for her, is still No. 1 on that list. But it was Kerr who came up No. 1 at the U.S. Women's Open on Sunday, winning her first major championship with a final-round of 1-under 70 and a total score of 5-under 279.
The final leaders:
Cristie Kerr, 279 (-5)
Angela Park, 281 (-3)
Lorena Ochoa, 281 (-3)
Se Ri Pak, 282 (-2)
In-Bee Park, 282 (-2)
Jiyai Shin, 284 (E)
Kerr and Ochoa battled throughout the day until Kerr took a 1-shot lead on No. 14 with a long birdie putt on one of Pine Needles' toughest holes. On the next tee, Ochoa lost her drive into the trees left, a common miss for her in pressure situations. She made a mess of the 15th hole yet still managed a par - but it was apparent that Ochoa was struggling under pressure again.
It finally got to her on the 17th, where she again lost a drive left, then badly misplayed a fairway bunker shot and eventually made bogey. Kerr was up by two with a hole to go, and parred No. 18 for the trophy.
For Kerr, the "she-hasn't-won-a-major" talk is over. For Ochoa, it grows a little louder.
