Rose, Wetterich Lead at Close of Tough Day 1 at The Masters

Thursday April 5, 2007
The big winner on the opening day of The Masters was the golf course. Augusta National was firm and fast, and the scores reflected it. Only two players broke 70, only nine broke par. Darren Clarke shot 83, Paul Casey 79, Ernie Els 78, Phil Mickelson 76, and Tiger Woods closed with back-to-back bogeys.

The leaders are Justin Rose and Brett Wetterich with 69s. Rose's day was pretty remarkable - he hit only five greens, but with some fantastic chipping needed only 20 putts.

Here are the golfers under par following the first round:

Justin Rose, 69
Brett Wetterich, 69
David Howell , 70
David Toms, 70
Tim Clark, 71
Vaughn Taylor, 71
Zach Johnson, 71
Rich Beem, 71
J.J. Henry, 71

Other notables:

Davis Love III, 72
Henrik Stenson, 72
Tiger Woods, 73
Vijay Singh, 73
Adam Scott, 74
Geoff Ogilvy, 75
Jim Furyk, 75
Sergio Garcia, 76
Phil Mickelson, 76
Retief Goosen, 76
Ernie Els, 78

How tough was scoring on Day 1? Those at 75 are in the Top 30.
