Arnold Palmer to Hit Opening Shot at The Masters

Wednesday April 4, 2007
arnold palmer The Masters hasn't had an honorary starter since 2002, when Sam Snead served in that role for the last time. That will change this year when Arnold Palmer steps into the role and opens the tournament with a ceremonial drive.

Palmer becomes the seventh golfer to serve as honorary starter for The Masters, and the first since Snead.

Arnold Palmer last played The Masters in 2004, his 50th appearance. Since then he'd been coy about whether he would ever step into the honorary starter role. But he signalled earlier this year a willingness to consider it. And when Augusta asked, Arnold answered. His explanation was simple:

"The time has come. I think all of you know what Augusta means to me."
