A Win for Tommy Two Gloves
Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey, one of the more popular "Big Break" alums owing to his syrupy Southern drawl and highly unorthodox golf swing, is, as we've pointed out before, the most successful "Big Break" alum in terms of wins. Gainey has won several times on mini-tours, including the U.S. Pro Golf Tour championship a couple years ago (good for a $50,000 paycheck), and multiple times on the Tarheel Tour. Now Gainey, currently appearing in "Big Break VII: Reunion," has gone and done it again: A few days ago he wrapped up another Tarheel Tour win.
I wanted to pass this article along because it contains some interesting background about Gainey that we haven't heard before:
...Gainey's freewheeling golf swing takes just as unique a path as he has."My swing is a lot different than others," Gainey drawled. "I self-taught myself. It's really hard to describe my swing versus everybody else's. Most everybody else has had lessons, and I don't have any."
After high school, it was straight to Central Carolina Technical College. Then he spent years earning his living as an assembly-line worker in a water heater factory and moving furniture.
Gainey "went halves" with a buddy on his first professional event, a TearDrop Tournament he won to the tune of $15,000. But he had to drop out of the professional scene for a while soon after when some family members fell ill. Later, with the backing of a few buddies he met while living for a three-year spell in Charleston, Gainey got back into it.
He presently has status on four mini tours, though has not played a Nationwide or PGA Tour event.
