Tiger Woods Discovers the Joy of Six
NBC announcer Dan Hicks pointed out during Sunday's final round of the CA Championship that Tiger Woods was trying to win the tournament for the sixth time - and that it would be the first tournament Woods has won six times. And that's what Tiger did, claiming a 2-stroke victory over Brett Wetterich. But it's a little more significant than just his first 6-win tournament for Tiger. Fact is, there are only four other golfers in the history of the PGA Tour who have won the same event at least six times.
The recordholder is Sam Snead, who won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times. Jack Nicklaus (The Masters), Harry Vardon (British Open), Alex Ross (North & South Open) and Snead again (Miami Open) each won the same tournament six times. And now Woods joins that list.
But wait, there's more: It was Woods' third-straight win in the CA Championship. The CA is the fifth tournament in which Woods has threepeated (won back-to-back-to-back). Woods is the first golfer in PGA Tour history to threepeat in five different tournaments.
The victory was also the 56th of Woods' PGA Tour career.
