Funk went wire-to-wire to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the PGA Tour's first tournament in Mexico. He defeated Jose Coceres on the second playoff hole to claim the victory. Granted, the best golfers in the world were absent, the Top 64 playing the WGC Match Play Championship instead. But Funk still beat the best-of-the-rest the PGA Tour has to offer, including plenty of golfers less than half his age.
In so doing, Funk became just the second golfer to win on the PGA Tour after having won on the Champions Tour (Craig Stadler was the first). He's also the fifth-oldest player to win on the PGA Tour.
Here are the six golfers over age 50 who have won on the PGA Tour:
- Sam Snead, 1965 Greater Greensboro Open - age 52 years, 10 months, 8 days
- Art Wall, 1975 Greater Milwaukee Open - age 51 years, 7 months, 10 days
- Jim Barnes, 1937 Long Island Open - age 51 years, 3 months, 7 days
- John Barnum, 1962 Cajun Classic - age 51 years, 1 month, 5 days
- Fred Funk, 2007 Mayakoba Golf Classic - age 50 years, 8 months, 12 days
- Craig Stadler, 2003 B.C. Open - 50 years, 1 month, 18 days
That's it. Snead, of course, is one of the all-time greats. Barnes was great, too, a Hall of Famer, one of the best of the first quarter of the 20th century. Wall won 14 times on Tour, including a major. And here's some good trivia for you: John Barnum's win on the list above was the first victory on the PGA Tour by a golfer using a Ping putter.
