Hawaiian Teen Makes Cut at Sony

Saturday January 13, 2007
And we're not talking about 17-year-old Michelle Wie. She shot 78-76 - which, in reality, is still much better than you could ever objectively expect any teen girl would shoot in a PGA Tour event ... but hey, at least she finished ahead of two others this time, rather than dead last. Regular readers of this site know I am a big supporter of Wie's, but I stand by what I wrote several months back: for her own good, Wie should stop playing on the PGA Tour.

No, we're talking about 16-year-old Tadd Fujikawa, who shot 71 in the opening round of the Sony Open, then followed that up with a 66 (including an eagle on the final hole) to easily make the cut. And Fujikawa didn't just make the cut, he's in the Top 25!

Fujikawa, a 5-foot-1 sophomore in high school, is the second-youngest player ever to make a PGA Tour cut:

  1. Bob Panasik, 1957 Canadian Open, 15 years, 8 months
  2. Tadd Fujikawa, 2007 Sony Open, 16 years, 4 days
  3. Ty Tryon, 2001 Honda Classic, 16 years, 9 months
Nobody's ever heard of Panasik, and Tryon has been a bust. So this accomplishment doesn't automatically mean we can expect a long, productive career on the PGA Tour from Fujikawa. However, it's not the first time he's made a little history.

Last year, Fujikawa won his sectional qualifier to become the youngest player player since World War II to qualify for the U.S. Open, and then was the youngest-ever to play the U.S. Open.
