Golfers in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Tuesday October 3, 2006
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there are many ways that golfers can contribute to the cause of breast cancer research.

The LPGA, whose official national charity is the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has a page here that details many efforts to better treat the disease and to find cures, and ways that golfers can contribute.

LPGA star Christie Kerr raises money with every birdie she makes through her organization, Birdies for Breast Cancer. The Val Skinner Foundation was founded by the former LPGA player who is now a commentator on golf broadcasts.

Golfers can also contribute indirectly through purchases of golf products whose manufacturers have pledged to donate a portion of their profits. Golf For Women magazine offers a slideshow of some of those products.

Rally For A Cure is a partnership between Golf For Women and the Komen Foundation. Rally For A Cure events are grassroots movements organized at local clubs to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer. Visit the site to find out how to organize a rally at your club.

And check out About.com's Breast Cancer site, where guide Pam Stephan has many, many items detailing risk factors, prevention, symptoms and treatment, along with many others ways to support breast cancer research.
