PGA Tour Win Streak Continues, and More Records for Tiger
Woods rolled to an 8-shot win in the WGC American Express Championship. It was his sixth straight PGA Tour victory.
Some of you might be wondering about the World Match Play event a couple weeks ago when Woods lost in the first round. Didn't that end the winning streak? Yes and no. It ended Woods' overall winning streak; however, the World Match Play is a European Tour tournament, not a PGA Tour event. So Tiger's PGA Tour winning streak was not affected by that loss.
And that winning streak is now the second-best in PGA Tour history, tying Ben Hogan, plus a previous win streak by Woods. Here are the top winning streaks on the PGA Tour:
1. Byron Nelson, 11 straight, 1945
2. Ben Hogan, 6 straight, 1948
(tie) Tiger Woods, 6 straight, 1999-2000
(tie) Tiger Woods, 6 straight, 2006
5. Byron Nelson, 4 straight, 1945-46
(tie) Jack Burke Jr., 4 straight, 1952
(tie) Ben Hogan, 4 straight, 1953
The victory was the 8th for Woods this year, which includes two majors. My ranking of the Top 10 seasons in golf history will definitely need updating at year's end (sorry Vijay, you're going to get bumped).
It was also Tiger's 54th career victory. He's fifth on the all-time wins list, now just eight behind Arnold Palmer.
But wait, we're not done yet. The win on Sunday also allowed Woods to set another record. Tiger now has won eight PGA Tour events in three different seasons - something no other golfer has ever done. Hogan, Nelson, Palmer and Sam Snead each won eight or more PGA Tour events twice, but only Tiger has done it three times.
