PGA Championship - Glover, Riley Lead After Day 1

Thursday August 17, 2006
Lucas Glover, playing in the morning, and Chris Riley, playing in the afternoon, bookended Day 1 at the PGA Championship with rounds of 66 to share the lead after the first round.

Here's how the leaderboard looks:

Lucas Glover, -6 (66)
Chris Riley, -6 (66)
Billy Andrade, -5 (67)
Stewart Cink, -4 (68)
Robert Allenby -4 (68)
Luke Donald, -4 (68)
J.J. Henry, -4 (68)
Henrik Stenson, -4 (68)
Davis Love III, -4 (68)

Davis Love III got it to 7-under after 14 holes, but stumbled a bit down the stretch. The marquee pairing on Day 1 - Phil Mickelson (Masters winner), Tiger Woods (British Open winner) and Geoff Ogilvy (U.S. Open winner) - didn't disappoint, with all three players posting 69s.

Fred Funk and Sergio Garcia are also at 3-under. Among a large group at 2-under are Retief Goosen, Jim Furyk and Stuart Appleby. Other notables include Fred Couples, Ernie Els and John Daly at 1-under; and Vijay Singh and David Duval at 1-over.

Based on today's scores, it's clear that while Medinah No. 3 is the longest course in major championship history, it's been set up well and is playing eminently fair. A golf course that is yielding low scores gives a larger number of golfers the chance to sneak in a victory.
